In collaboration with a small group of Hmong women who are Vietnamese refugees rescued by the Non-Profit Organisation Boat People SOS (BPSOS http://www.bpsos.org/), the Mong label is the labour love of a livelihood project supported by Thinges. The project aims to supplement the income of these women who as refugees could often only perform odd jobs that pay very little. We hope this initiative grows into a sustainable business for its beneficiaries and beyond in the near future.
Hmong culture is known for their bright colourful and intricate embroidery (called pa ndau or paj ntaub, literally “flower cloth”). As many of the refugees have to look after their young children, making handicrafts at home to sell becomes a way of getting income. Unfortunately, as refugees, this is often illegal and it is very difficult to have a stall or business to sell their goods.
Mong label (t-shirts) is a first foray for us in melding traditional Hmong designs and technique with modern day products. We mindfully kept the products simple while retaining the traditional beauty and elegance of Hmong embroidery. This allows us to offer a carefully handmade and unique product imbued with traditions yet perfect for modern daily wear. And at the same time keeping it cost effective for the Hmong woman to produce.
*Every t-shirt is one-of-a-kind and puts SGD$12 into the hands of the very woman who performed the embroidery.
Due to the precarious situations of these women, we are regretfully unable to offer more information about them in terms of their identities or locations. Rest assured, BPSOS is doing their best to help them and you can do the same too by supporting Mong label products.
